Slow Cooker Strawberry Applesauce Recipe

  • Author: Harper
  • Total Time: 5 hours 15 minutes
  • Yield: 10 servings 1x
  • Diet: Gluten Free

Description

This Slow Cooker Strawberry Applesauce is a delightful, naturally sweetened treat made from fresh apples and strawberries cooked low and slow to develop a rich, comforting flavor. Perfect as a healthy snack or side dish, this applesauce is easy to customize with your preferred level of sweetness and can be enjoyed warm or chilled.

Ingredients

Scale

Fruits

  • 7 apples (about 34 pounds), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1 lb container of strawberries, stems removed

Liquids

  • 1/2 cup apple juice or water

Sweetener (optional)

  • Sugar, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Fruit: Peel, core, and slice the apples, then place them into the slow cooker. Remove the stems from the strawberries and add them to the slow cooker along with the apples. Pour in the apple juice or water to help with cooking and moisture.
  2. Cook the Fruit: Cover the slow cooker and cook the mixture on HIGH for 5 hours or LOW for 8 hours, allowing the fruit to soften and blend naturally as it cooks.
  3. Form the Applesauce: After cooking, use a whisk to stir the apples and strawberries together until a sauce starts to form. For a smoother texture, you can blend the mixture in a blender or food processor.
  4. Sweeten to Taste: Taste the applesauce and add sugar gradually, one tablespoon at a time, until you reach your desired sweetness level, mixing well after each addition.
  5. Serve and Store: Serve the strawberry applesauce warm or cooled. Store leftovers in small containers in the refrigerator for up to a week, or freeze for up to 3 months. When freezing, thaw in the refrigerator overnight before use.

Notes

  • Choosing sweeter apple varieties like Fuji or Gala will reduce or eliminate the need for added sugar.
  • If you prefer a chunkier texture, avoid blending the applesauce and simply whisk gently before serving.
  • Use apple juice for a richer flavor or water for a lighter taste.
  • Leftover applesauce freezes well; use airtight containers or freezer bags to prevent freezer burn.
  • This recipe is naturally low in fat and can be made vegan and gluten-free.
