Ingredients
Scale
Ingredients
- 85 g unsalted butter
- 6 cups regular marshmallows
- 4 cups Rice Bubbles (Krispies)
- ½ tsp salt
- Red food colouring (as needed for tinting and decoration)
Instructions
- Prepare the bain-marie: Start by placing 1/2 cup of water into a small pot and bring it to a boil. Place a large heatproof bowl securely over the pot to create a bain-marie setup for gentle melting.
- Melt butter and marshmallows: Add the unsalted butter and marshmallows into the heatproof bowl. Continually whisk the mixture until it forms a smooth paste, which typically takes 2 to 4 minutes.
- Add salt and coloring: Carefully remove the heatproof bowl from the pot using oven mitts or a tea towel. Stir in the ½ teaspoon salt and add a drop or more of red food colouring, whisking well to combine and tint the mixture evenly.
- Mix with Rice Bubbles: Place the Rice Bubbles in a large mixing bowl. Pour the warm marshmallow mixture over the Rice Bubbles and thoroughly mix to coat all the cereal evenly.
- Shape the brains: Lightly oil your hands to prevent sticking. Shape the coated Rice Bubbles into oval brain shapes. Use a butter knife to create a dent in the center to mimic the brain’s grooves.
- Add vein details: Dip a toothpick into red food colouring and carefully draw veins on the surface of each brain shape for a realistic Halloween effect.
- Store properly: Place the finished brain treats into an airtight container. They can be kept fresh for up to one week.
Notes
- Use oven mitts or a thick tea towel when handling the hot bowl to avoid burns.
- Adjust the amount of red food colouring according to your desired intensity.
- Oil your hands lightly when shaping to prevent sticking and ensure smooth forming.
- Store the treats in an airtight container at room temperature to keep them fresh and crunchy.
- Use regular Rice Bubbles or similar puffed rice cereal for best texture.
