French Onion Dip Recipe

  • Author: Harper
  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 2 servings 1x

Description

This French Onion Dip recipe features deeply caramelized yellow onions blended with creamy sour cream and mayonnaise, creating a rich and flavorful dip perfect for pairing with crispy potato chips. The slow caramelization process brings out the natural sweetness of the onions, making this dip a savory and irresistible appetizer or snack.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Dip

  • 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 2 large yellow onions, julienned
  • 1½ teaspoons kosher salt, divided
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 2 cups sour cream
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise

For Garnish and Serving

  • Chopped fresh chives, to garnish
  • Potato chips, to serve

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the Onions: In a large skillet, heat the extra-virgin olive oil over medium heat. Add the julienned onions and season with 1½ teaspoons kosher salt. Cook, stirring frequently, until the onions begin to soften and shrink, about 8 to 10 minutes. Reduce the heat to medium-low and continue cooking, stirring occasionally, until the onions are deeply caramelized and golden brown, approximately 25 to 30 minutes. If the onions start to stick or burn, add a few tablespoons of water to deglaze the pan, scraping up the browned bits. Remove from heat and let the onions cool.
  2. Mix the Dip: In a large bowl, combine the cooled caramelized onions with sour cream and mayonnaise. Stir thoroughly until all ingredients are well incorporated and the dip has a creamy consistency.
  3. Garnish and Serve: Transfer the dip to a serving dish. Garnish with chopped fresh chives and freshly ground black pepper. Serve immediately alongside potato chips for dipping.

Notes

  • Caramelize the onions slowly to avoid burning and develop a deep, sweet flavor.
  • Deglazing the pan with water helps release onion fond without adding extra oil.
  • Sour cream and mayonnaise can be substituted with Greek yogurt for a tangier and healthier option.
  • This dip is best served fresh but can be refrigerated for up to 2 days.
  • Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper according to taste before serving.
