Easy Polish Haluski Recipe

  • Author: Harper
  • Total Time: 40 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings 1x

Description

A classic and comforting Polish dish featuring tender egg noodles sautéed with crispy bacon, buttery onions, and cabbage. This Easy Polish Haluski recipe is perfect for a quick and hearty meal, balancing savory flavors with simple ingredients.

Ingredients

Scale

Pasta

  • 8 ounces medium egg noodles

Meat & Dairy

  • 3 slices bacon, chopped
  • 3 tablespoons salted butter

Vegetables & Seasonings

  • 1 1/2 cups sliced onion
  • 1 head cabbage, cored and sliced thinly
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon fresh ground pepper

Instructions

  1. Cook Noodles: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook the egg noodles according to the package instructions. Drain well and set aside.
  2. Cook Bacon: Heat a large, deep skillet over medium-high heat. Add the chopped bacon and cook until crisp, about 5-7 minutes. Remove the bacon with a slotted spoon and transfer to a paper towel-lined plate to drain.
  3. Sauté Onions and Cabbage: In the same skillet with bacon fat, add the sliced onions and thinly sliced cabbage. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are wilted and tender, about 8-10 minutes.
  4. Toss Everything Together: Return the cooked bacon to the skillet with the cabbage and onions. Add the cooked egg noodles and 2 tablespoons of butter. Toss everything together gently to combine and melt the butter throughout.
  5. Season and Serve: Season the mixture with kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Serve immediately while warm for the best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • You can substitute smoked sausage for bacon if preferred for a different flavor.
  • For a vegetarian version, omit the bacon and use additional butter or olive oil.
  • Leftovers reheat well in a skillet over low heat with a splash of water or broth to prevent drying out.
  • Adding a sprinkle of fresh parsley can brighten the flavors.
