  • Author: Harper
  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 12 egg rolls 1x

Description

This Cheeseburger Egg Rolls recipe combines all the classic flavors of a cheeseburger wrapped in a crispy egg roll wrapper. Ground beef, onions, garlic, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, cheddar cheese, and pickles are cooked and mixed as the perfect filling. The rolls are folded carefully and fried until golden and crunchy, creating an irresistible appetizer or snack that pairs wonderfully with thousand island dressing.

Ingredients

Scale

Filling:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 medium yellow onion, finely minced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • Salt and ground black pepper, to taste
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup diced pickles

Egg Rolls:

  • 1314 egg roll wrappers
  • 1 egg white, whisked
  • Vegetable oil for cooking
  • Olive oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Preheat the pan: Preheat a medium cast iron pan or non-stick skillet over medium heat to prepare for cooking the filling.
  2. Sauté onion: Add one tablespoon of vegetable oil to the pan and sauté the minced onion until translucent, unlocking its sweetness and flavor.
  3. Cook ground beef: Add the ground beef to the pan and break it up with a wooden spoon. Season with salt and black pepper, cover, and cook until the meat starts to brown.
  4. Add garlic and seasonings: Stir in the minced garlic, yellow mustard, and Worcestershire sauce to enhance the savoriness of the beef mixture.
  5. Drain excess fat: Drain off the grease and juices from the pan to avoid sogginess, then transfer the cooked beef mixture to a large mixing bowl.
  6. Mix in cheese and pickles: Add shredded cheddar cheese to the hot beef mixture and stir until melted and evenly combined. Then fold in diced pickles to add tang and texture.
  7. Heat frying oil: In a deep skillet, heat olive oil to approximately 350°F (175°C) over medium heat for frying the egg rolls.
  8. Assemble egg rolls: Spread about 2 tablespoons of the cheeseburger filling in a line on each egg roll wrapper, leaving about an inch of space on each side of the wrapper.
  9. Fold and seal: Fold the corner nearest to you over the filling and tuck under the mixture. Then fold in the side corners toward the center. Using your fingers dipped in whisked egg white, brush the edges to seal the wrapper and carefully roll it up tightly.
  10. Fry egg rolls: Fry the egg rolls in batches in the hot olive oil until golden brown and crisp, about 1-2 minutes per side. Turn once the bottom side is golden to ensure even frying.
  11. Serve: Remove the fried egg rolls from oil, drain on paper towels, and serve warm with thousand island dressing for dipping.

Notes

  • You can substitute ground turkey for ground beef for a leaner option.
  • Ensure the oil is hot enough before frying to prevent greasy egg rolls.
  • Use a slotted spoon to remove egg rolls to drain excess oil effectively.
  • For extra crispiness, double fry the egg rolls by frying twice for shorter periods each time.
  • If you prefer, bake the egg rolls at 425°F for 15-20 minutes, flipping halfway through for a healthier alternative.
