Description
Caramel Crackers are a delightful sweet and crunchy treat made with oyster crackers coated in a rich homemade caramel sauce, baked to perfection and finished with a sprinkle of salt for a perfect balance of flavors.
Ingredients
Scale
Crackers
- 1 package (9 ounces) oyster crackers
Caramel Sauce
- 2 sticks (1 cup) unsalted butter
- 1 cup brown sugar, packed
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon salt
Instructions
- Prepare: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and evenly spread out the oyster crackers in a single layer.
- Make Caramel: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Stir in the brown sugar, vanilla extract, and cinnamon until the sugar dissolves completely. Bring the mixture to a boil and allow it to boil for 2-3 minutes until it thickens slightly.
- Coat Crackers: Pour the hot caramel sauce evenly over the crackers, using a spatula to ensure all the crackers are coated well. Sprinkle the salt evenly over the caramel-coated crackers.
- Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 7-9 minutes. Watch carefully to avoid burning; the caramel should bubble and coat the crackers nicely.
- Finish: Remove the baking sheet from the oven and allow the caramel crackers to cool completely on the sheet. Once cooled, break the clusters apart and store them in an airtight container to keep them fresh.
Notes
- Make sure to watch the baking crackers closely during baking to prevent the caramel from burning.
- Use parchment paper or a silicone baking mat to prevent sticking and make cleanup easier.
- For a twist, sprinkle chopped nuts or a pinch of cayenne pepper over the caramel before baking.
- Once cooled, store caramel crackers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week.
