Description

This classic Campbell’s Green Bean Casserole is a creamy, comforting side dish perfect for family dinners and holiday feasts. Combining tender green beans with a savory mushroom sauce and topped with crispy fried onions, it’s easy to prepare and sure to disappear quickly from the table.

Ingredients

Scale

Vegetables

  • 4 cups cut green beans (two 1516 oz cans, 1 lb frozen, or 1½ lbs fresh)

Sauce

  • 1 can (10.5 oz) condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 tsp soy sauce
  • ¼ tsp black pepper, or to taste

Topping

  • 1⅓ cups crispy French fried onions, divided

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Green Beans: If using fresh green beans, wash, trim, and cut them into bite-sized pieces. Blanch in boiling water for 2 minutes, then drain. For canned beans, simply drain well; for frozen, thaw before using.
  2. Make the Sauce and Combine: In a mixing bowl, whisk together the condensed cream of mushroom soup, milk, and soy sauce until smooth. Stir in the green beans, half of the crispy French fried onions (about ⅔ cup), and black pepper until evenly coated.
  3. Assemble the Casserole: Lightly coat a 9×9-inch baking dish with cooking spray. Spread the green bean mixture evenly inside the dish, ensuring everything is well distributed.
  4. Cook the Casserole: For the air fryer method, bake at 350°F for 10 minutes. Stir the mixture, then sprinkle the remaining crispy onions over the top and air fry for another 2 minutes, just until the onions turn golden and crispy. For the oven method, bake at 350°F for 25 minutes. Stir, then add the remaining onions on top and bake for an additional 5 minutes until the topping is crispy and browned.
  5. Serve: Remove from heat and serve warm. This delicious, creamy casserole makes a great side dish for any main course.

Notes

  • You can use fresh, frozen, or canned green beans depending on availability and preference.
  • Adjust black pepper to taste for mild or more peppery flavor.
  • For a dairy-free version, substitute milk with a plant-based milk and use a dairy-free cream of mushroom soup.
  • To make the casserole ahead, assemble and refrigerate before baking; add a few extra minutes to baking time if baking straight from the fridge.
  • For extra crispiness, consider broiling for 1-2 minutes after baking, but watch carefully to avoid burning.
